All,

I'm pleased to announce the availability of another new feature for users of this website : the IP Home Port RSS Portal.

  What Is The Portal?

The IP Home Port RSS Portal is an easy-to-use tool for site members to check out the most recently published items on IP owner blogs as well as RSS feeds from sailing-oriented magazines and news sources.

This portal will display summaries of (or in some cases the full text of) the ten most recent items from the selected feed.  These items are gathered in realtime, i.e. on demand, when you select the item from the drop down menu, as opposed to some web-based portals that only take a periodic snapshot.

If you want to read further details on any of the items there will typically be a link that you can follow to visit the source website and read the full text of the item. Once there, you can usually subscribe to receive future updates via your personal RSS reader or web browser instead of having to visit this portal.

How Do I Launch The Portal?

To launch the portal, simply click on the 'RSS Portal' link on the Main Menu (in the upper left corner of most site pages).

How Do I Use The Portal?

Using the portal is easy - just click on the desired item from one of the three drop-down menus at the top of the page, release, and wait for the selected feed to be displayed.

Owner Blogs

The left-hand drop-down menu gives you access to RSS feeds from over 40 IP owner blogs (an abbreviation for 'web logs'). These feeds include status updates from folks who have gone cruising, those that are getting ready to cruise, and even some that are happy to stay close to home but like to talk about sailing in general and their boats in particular. If your favorite owner's blog isn't included here please nominate it via this form (LINK).

Sailing Magazines

Many sailing magazines maintain RSS feeds with digests of articles from recent issues as well as current sailing-oriented news events. The center drop-down menu gives you access to a sampling of these RSS feeds. Ten of the most active feeds are included on this portal but we're happy to add others - if your favorite magazine isn't included please nominate it via this form (LINK).

Other RSS Feeds

The right-hand drop-down menu includes a sampling of RSS feeds from sailing-oriented news sources or forums. If your favorite RSS feed isn't included here please nominate it via this form (LINK).

  What Is RSS?

RSS, originally an acronym for 'RDF Site Summary' but also interpreted as 'Rich Site Summary' or 'Real Simple Syndication', is a popular way for websites to publish content to visitors. This content may be news stories, product announcements, project reports, discussion forum excerpts or, in the case of blogs, personal status updates.

An RSS feed may, depending on how it is configured by the author, include full or summarized text of the feed items plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship. It may also include hyperlinks, photographs, and even audio and/or video content.

Rather than visiting many different websites to see what's new on each, you can use an 'RSS reader' (often just your standard web browser such as IE, Chrome, Firefox or Safari) to subscribe and have the new content from the RSS feed presented when, where and how you want it. Exact instructions for this subscription process will vary depending upon your reader of choice and are outside of the scope of this portal.

  Important Things To Remember

1) The feed contents may or may not be current depending upon how well the feed is maintained by the owner.

2) The feed contents are the responsibility of (and most likely copyrighted by) the owner.

3) If you like what you see on any particular feed just click through to the source site and subscribe for automatic updates.

4) Depending on your connection speed and feed server loading it may take a few seconds for your feed to appear, so please be patient.

5) IP Home Port assumes no responsibility for the information presented in these feeds and is providing this portal simply as a means to allow users to explore the sailing-oriented resources available to them elsewhere on the web.

As always, please submit any issues, comments, or suggestions regarding the RSS Portal or any other aspect of the IP Home Port site by sending a PM to Stuart W.
